When you are this close to the ocean, what better to eat than seafood, and who better than an ex-fisherman to select it for you? Bar do David achieved word-of-mouth fame as a favela success story even before the police moved in to 'pacify' the favela but his food and hospitality deserve a wide audience. The seafood feijoada, an original take on the Brazilian national dish, draws the crowds (Saturday only) but we recommend the tropeira, a selection of pork cuts with greens and beans (served Fri-Sun). The menu is small, the restaurant modest and there are absolutely no airs and graces, but it is well worth the climb up Chapeu Mangueira from the Leme asphalt to see what the fuss is about.

I'm putting this restaurant in my story about the Confederados who moved to Brasil after the Civil War.
