The imperious Copacabana Palace across the street first threw open its doors way back in the 1920s, so it is fitting that Charleston Lounge, the neighbourhood nightlife’s newest addition, should conjure up a little something of the roaring decade.
A three-piece jazz band perched up in the rafters (which are also filled with champagne bottles) and beautiful wooden panelling compound the atmosphere, topped off nicely by the feeling of settling back into thick, purple velvet sofas at and pouring over the mouth-watering list of 266 types of fizzy luxury and essential accompaniments like oysters and cheeseboards.
National drops proudly head up the selection, with an award-winning Moscatel Premium Casa Valduga (R$69) providing the sweet and the fruity and a 130 Anos Brut (R$84) something drier. If you’re particularly thirsty there is always the showy three-litre Jeraboam (R$369) to crack into or longer drinks come in the form of classic cocktails like the Bellini, Black Velvet and Lady Brandy (R$23), after a few of which the beautifully-tiled, rustic bathrooms are a real pleasure.
Proseccos are well represented, as are less-renowned Portuguese, Spanish and Argentine efforts, and experimentation is rewarded, with the good range of by-the-glass options running from Nieto Sanetiner (R$12) right up to the mighty Tatinger (R$79). For out and out luxury, though, the winner by a long, long way is the Dom Perignon Rosé. R$1,390 will buy you several memorable glasses of champagne, only just less than a suite for the night over the road.
