As Lapa continues its never-ending march towards gentrification, it is reassuring to know that the likes of Antônio's remain on hand to deliver the simple things in life. In this case, that means a top notch location on the corner of Avenida Mem de Sá and Rua do Lavradio (the street that plays home to the monthly antiques fair as well as samba halls like the famous Rio Scenarium), a never ending supply of cold draught beer and classic carioca bar snacks like the bolinhos de bacalhau and shrimp pasteis.

Indoors may not have much going for it and things can get pretty tightly packed as the week wears on, so opt instead for a stool or two along the outside walls and watch as the usual Lapa goings on start to unravel. On the first Saturday of the month they also throw a feijoada into the mix (R$80 for two), the traditional bean and pork stew served with all the trimmings to help fuel the shopping at the aforementioned Feira do Rio Antigo outdoor market.
