Metrô Cinelândia
Looming masterfully over the square also known as Praça Marechal Floriano, the Theatro Municipal in Cinelândia was restored in 2010 to its former glory as part of the not inconsiderable centenary celebrations that drew even then President Luiz Inacio 'Lula' da Silva to the bleachers. Outside, gleaming golden statuettes like the eagle perched on the main dome now once more glitter in the sunlight, whilst indoors everything from the foyer to the stage has been completely renovated in the image of the original. The most expensive theatre built outside of Europe upon inauguration in 1909, its easy to see why. Lording over Cinelândia like an elder statesman, the re-opening brought a fresh wave of world-class opera singers, ballet dancers and orchestras to the famous stage, whilst Sundays see a first-come-first-served special offer, where R$1 can get you the best seats in the house if you're lucky.
