Selarón Staircase

When a Chilean immigrant began tiling the steps outside his home in Brazil's colours, he inadvertently created one of Rio's most enduring attractions.

The obsession of the late Chilean artist Jorge Selarón, the staircase that runs from Rua Joaquim Silva in Lapa up to the lower reaches of Santa Teresa now bears his name thanks to twenty years of tiling and re-tiling each step into a never-ending mosaic of colour. Often to be found tending to them himself before his tragic death in early 2013, his creation became one of the more intriguing and undoubtedly unique symbols of the city thanks to videos by the likes of Snoop Dogg and U2 using them as a backdrop.
