Taking a cue from the Barcelona bars they frequented whilst living in the Catalan capital, Mais Que Nada's owners have eschewed the Brazilian approach to tapas practiced at the likes of ¡Venga! for a more authentic touch, and the result is welcomingly fresh and laid-back. Retro record sleeves adorn the walls and tables, hinting at the live music that regularly occupies different corners of the bar by night, when the sounds of jazz and bossa nova accompany the carefully prepared plates coming from the Chilean-helmed kitchen.
Perfect for a post-beach stop-off, grab a refreshing gazpacho soup (R$8) and cast an eye over the ever-changing specials board above the door, or play it safe with a tangy ceviche (R$19), Spanish tortilla (R$10.50) and lightly spiced patatas bravas potatoes (R$15). The delicate crab ravioli (R$24.50) is a nice addition, and the individual Paella is of share-able size as part of a selection of three or four dishes. Or, indeed, if you want to keep room for the dessert carpaccio; slithers of rich chocolate with a strawberry mousse centre that are as good as they sound. Buzzing evenings towards the end of the week are fuelled by the house shots (Thursdays see inventive, occasionally flame-fuelled combos all at R$5) and well-priced cocktails (R$13-$19), making Mas Que Nada a well-positioned warm-up for the nearby Copa nightlife.
