Palácio Tiradentes website

On the site of the former Imperial Parliament building now stands the Tiradentes Palace, named in honour of Joaquim José da Silva Xavier aka Tiradentes (The Dentist), a political activist imprisoned in the cells below before his execution in 1792 for encouraging a rebellion against the Portuguese imperial power. The original building was demolished in 1922, paving the way for the new eclectically-styled building that was the home of the National Congress before the capital moved to Brasilia and today houses the Legislative Assembly for the State of Rio de Janeiro. A permanent exhibition to that power remains with a walk-round photographic tour, but the building on its own, with the huge central meeting chamber, is worth a look too.
