In 2011, four young graduates put their creative heads together to inaugurate Botafogo's freshest new cultural space, nightclub, exhibition hall, café and boutique style hub all under the fitting name of Comuna. The warehouse-style venue brought a refreshingly original concept to Botafogo's growing list of cult night spots, but things have moved on somewhat from the anything-goes early days of electronic parties and film festivals, largely due to the granting of a restaurant, rather than a music, licence, but the club scene's loss is the bar scene's gain.

Now, from Tuesdays to Fridays, one of the city's more appealing happy hours unravels, and from 5pm-9pm there are drinks and food specials on offer to help firmly consign work to history. The small kitchen knocks out imaginative sandwiches and great burgers, regularly hosting guest chefs for popular nights of more experimental menus. The bar staff are friendly, the crowd unpretentious, and the vibe, quite simply, one of the best in town.
