Cine Joia is harking back to a time when the seats wouldn't recline but an old lady who smelled of purple violet sweets brought chocolate and ice cream to you, prices weren't crippling and indie movies held their own against the big-budget bullies. Contrary to the opinion of anyone under the age of twenty, the most popular cinemas weren't always to be found in shopping malls. These huge all-in-one leisure complexes were preceded by high-profile buildings occupying entire street corners, some rivalling the theatres themselves in grandeur. One of the most iconic of these, Cine Joia, has re-opened its doors once again thanks to film fan Raphael Aguinaga's refit, complete with an old-school mentality and aesthetics. A constant stream of intriguing programmes fills the void left by the multiplex takeover, digital distribution the key to them showing some pretty out-there flicks.
