Eight generations ago the Talavera Campos family arrived in Rio Grande do Sul, suitcases brimming with recipes from the old country, and two generations later Alda churns out the very same  from her Santa Teresa home, using no less than 500 eggs a day in the process. One look at the gleaming delicacies like the pastel de nata, super sweet crème-caramel-esque toucinhos do céu and enticing little squares of sugar called fatias de braga and it is easy to see where all these eggs get used up.

Alda’s bem-casado, the most traditional of wedding day sweet biscuit sandwiches, have even been ordered back to their native Portugal, where they have become something of a lost art form. The small shop front doubles as a kind of miniature museum, displaying kitchen utensils long since taken off shop shelves, as well as the recipes hand-written by her ancestors. The collection has been built up over the eighteen years the shop has operated high up on the Santa Teresa hillside, complete with the classic blue and white tiles of their native Portugal. Well worth a visit for a quick coffee and desert after lunch in the neighbourhood, pull up a seat and sink into a taste of old-style Portugal, letting Alda and her egg-laden wonders transport your tastebuds back to Europe.
