At the foot of Santa Teresa sits this 1876-built museum housing important European artists such as Modigliani, Degas and Miró as well as a host of Brazilian and Asian furnishings and artworks. The delightful gardens are also part of the attraction, affording superb views out towards Sugarloaf and Corcovado. In 2006 the museum was in the headlines after the audacious robbery of four paintings in broad daylight during carnival. Picasso's 'The Dance' and Matisse's 'Luxembourg Gardens' as well as a Dali original were taken, with pieces of the former being found later in nearby Morro das Prazeres favela.
