Maya Café has attained legendary status in Laranjeiras for its chocolate-covered carrot cake, but that is really the tip of a very large croissant. Couple any one of five or six freshly baked and pleasingly warm sponges (R$6.50 +R$1.50 for chocolate sauce) with a coffee (R$4.50) for an afternoon stop-gap, but morning, noon or night they have something to offer. The cabinet of rolls and croissants coupled with a juice will hit the breakfast spot, or splurge on the Maya Brunch (R$65.80) which includes a bottle of sparkling wine, orange juice, toast and scrambled eggs. Sandwiches (from R$11.90) and salads (from R$7.90) take care of lunch, and by nightfall the decent selection of wines and sparklings can be indulged guilt-free with a bruschetta (from R$8.70) or selection of patês, breads and dips. All to be enjoyed in the cosy confines of this attractive street-side spot in one of Laranjeiras' more tranquil nooks.
