The thriving multimedia cultural centre known simply as the CCBB occupies a historic building on downtown Rua Primeiro de Março that was once central to the city's financial and business sectors. Rescued and resuscitated at the end of the 1980s, Banco do Brasil recognised its architectural significance and transformed it into a focus for art exhibitions, film and cultural debates. Uniting several exhibition spaces under one (very beautiful) roof, there is also a decent bookshop selling all kinds of weird and wonderful items, and an almost-adequate café for refuelling in the light of the vaulted glass ceiling.
