This architecturally eclectic library overlooking historic Cinelândia is home to over nine million volumes and includes the Thereza Christina Maria photograph collection left to Emperor Dom Pedro II in the nineteenth century, recognised by UNESCO for its historical value. Monographs, theses and pamphlets from the eighteenth century to the present day, issues of major national newspapers and magazines and rare prints, drawings and photographs from the likes of Debret, Volpi and Oscar Niemayer are held here. The music section has around 220,000 pieces of classical and popular music from names like Villa-Lobos, Noel Rosa, Tom Jobim and Pixinguinha.
