Dating back to the 1940s, Bar Léo is a famous old-time botequim with echoes of the time when T-shirts and unaccompanied women weren’t allowed inside bars. The bar is famed for having the creamiest draught beer in town – it means a huge head on the beer, which may leave you feeling short-changed, but try it: you might like it. The accompanying petiscos (appetisers) are excellent, especially the bolinhos de bacalhau (fried fish balls). The area around the bar can be sketchy at night, so it closes very early; but for early evening drinks, the boisterous, happy atmosphere is unbeatable.
