The Golden Tulip hotel’s own private Tokyo is the Opium restaurant, found at street level and almost more eye-catching than the accommodation towering over it thanks to an enticing terrace looking out onto one of Ipanema’s most bustling streets, Farme de Amoedo. Pan-Asian cuisine is the speciality, bringing the colour, flavour and atmosphere of Japan, China, India, Thailand and Vietnam to the table, all of them handled well, if not spectacularly. Choose from small combinations of sushi (R$18) or for something more filling the risotto with salmon is a safe bet, and shrimp lovers will be in their element.
