People are drawn to Lapa for many different reasons, but if its a touch of tradition you're after, then Democráticos is the place to be. In the same spot since 1867, its not lost any of its old-school, albeit nowadays a little frayed around the edges, glamour making it one of the oldest carnival societies still in existence. The spirit of that party-to-end-all-parties is still alive and kicking today, with a young crowd packing out the venue every weekend to everything from samba (as played by the Orchestra Republicana), to forro on Wednesdays. And given the huge dancefloor that is no mean feat, so practice your moves in advance, or simply sit back with a reasonably-priced beer and enjoy the show. Fridays are organised by Semente, a tiny local venue famous for bringing the spirit samba back to the area, so you know you are in good hands.
