Born and raised in the south of Bahia, Pedro Alvez Luz was brought up in a rural world largely devoid of culture. Lacking any outlet for his innate creativity and curiosity, the young man eventually found his way to Rio and became the formidable artist Pedro Grapíuna. Formerly an actor, set designer and surrealist painter, he now devotes his time and his workshop to crafting bizarre sculptures from recycled metal, taking everything from bike and car parts to door locks and hinges to fashion intricate giant bugs and figures of women in every day life that recall his simple upbringing. Larger pieces of over two metres high cost upwards of R$3,000, but smaller sculptures can be bought for under R$1,000. Call ahead to arrange a visit and see him in action.
