The Monastery of St. Benedict was built just twenty years after the founding of the city in 1565 and is to this day a quiet sanctuary in the centre of a vast metropolis. Its most immediately striking feature is the incredible contrast between the austere façade and the opulence and beauty of its interior, rich with baroque motifs overlaid with gold, and exuberant rococo carvings that fill the main altar and the Chapel of the Blessed Sacrament. Look out for the famous silver chandeliers, weighing in at 227lbs each and epiomising the grandeur of the building. The monastery and the sancristy, by the rules of the cloistered monks, may only be visited at scheduled times and only by men.
