The imposing baroque and neo-classical church Candelaria in centro was built at the turn of the eighteenth century and has had a mixed history since its somewhat laboured construction (that remarkably lasted almost a hundred years). The massacre in 1993 of street children who slept rough against its walls brought the church into the headlines for all the wrong reasons, but it remains one of the most beautiful and important religious buildings in the city, with regular mass attracting hundreds, and national holidays and parades using it as a focal point.
