Considering the cult following enjoyed by the 1998 Coen brothers movie, The Big Lebowski, it’s perhaps surprising there aren’t more themed bars out there based on it. This cosy space, nestled on the far side of a Barra Funda night-spot strip near Clash Club, and right next door to Alley Club, crams in as many references to the film as possible: there are bowling-pin lights and an alley-styled bar counter for starters, with bowling-shirt-clad servers behind it. There’s also a Time ‘Man of the Year’ mirror by the bathrooms, and most important of all, a menu dedicated to the white russian.
Those who aren’t partial to The Dude’s milky-coffee cocktail of choice can pick from a solid selection of other vodka-based drinks, like the spicy bloody mary and even some vodka-based twists on other classics, such as the (rumless) vodka mojito. Or for those who like their vitamin V pure, Lebowski stocks an above-average collection of imported premium vodkas like Grey Goose and the like at fairly reasonable prices – at least by São Paulo standards.
It’s compact: take ten steps into this bar and you’ll have already scoped out the entire space. But while it may be small, there’s still room for a tiny, darkened dancefloor, where DJs spin a loud post-hipster soundtrack from the back of the house. The Dude, in Barra Funda, abides.
