Despite being situated on Farme d'Amoedo, Rio's famous gay hub, the clientele at Japanese restaurant Yosuki in Ipanema is a diverse mix, proving very popular with tourists and Ipanema locals alike. Everything here feels - and indeed is - brand new. After the previous tenants, an all American burger joint, lasted little over six months, a real effort is being made not to be the next flash in the pan. The staff are attentive, maitre'd Airton charming and it is nice to feel they are looking to keep you utterly satisfied throughout your meal.
Although the rodízio (set-price all you can eat) is optional, the quality and freshness of the fish is reassuringly high, something of a rarity in this style of eating/gorging. Lunchtime is good value at R$39, while the lunchtime por-kilo buffet is R$55/kg. From the menu try the tuna with a fried herb crust, or salmon skin with rice flakes, but the star of the rodizio is the sesame-based Tataki, and if that sounds a bit too healthy, why not round off with a calorie-laden white chocolate Harumaki.
