Almost hidden on Rua da Carioca, this little cultural gem has served as an exhibition space and students' resource since it was founded in the '50s. It is home to a permanent collection of the works of the artist and founder Maria Teresa Viera, who died in 1998, and was a pioneering scholar in techniques of teaching art. Regular events, workshops and shows are held here, generally with an educational bent, and there are frequent exhibitions of contemporary artists worthy of note. The Salão Rogério Steinberg has in fact had more than 250 exhibits since it first opened, and concerts lined up for 2012 include jazz, choro and even pop-rock.
