For those seeking an English pint in a pub-like atmosphere, the recently opened Queen’s Head pub on the ground floor of the Centro Brasileiro Britânico (Brazilian British Centre) in Pinheiros might be a welcome stand-in for the real thing.

Replacing Drake’s, which closed its doors in 2010, the Queen’s Head goes for the traditional pub interior style: dark woods and red leather seating with a random selection of framed photos and some classic rock posters. An oversized Union Jack hogs the limelight, filling the wall behind a small stage that hosts live rock from Thursday to Saturday evenings.

And while it might feel more like a Disneyfied re-creation of a pub than something more genuine, a look at the decent selection of Scotch whiskies may lessen your inclination to gripe. The 21 beers on offer help, too, with five on tap including London Pride and Old Speckled Hen (R$14 per pint).

Greigor Caisley, consultant chef and the former owner of Drake’s, has produced a menu to appeal to Anglophiles looking for a comforting plate of pub grub, with the likes of Cornish pasties, fish and chips, and chicken curry on the menu. For a more Brazilian touch, go for the two-for-one caipirinhas (5-8pm Mon-Fri) and the huge beer garden – a much-needed corrective to the windowless pub – which is expected to reopen in time for summer.
