Owned and run by American Sam Flowers, the Gringo Café opened at the start of 2010 with hitherto unseen concepts for Rio like the bottomless coffee refill, pancakes with maple syrup and homemade cheesecakes all served in a bright, open sided location that evokes '50s California as well as twenty-first century Rio. The waffles (also with maple syrup) are a house favourite, but pretty much whatever youre hankering after they have breakfast sewn up.
Eggs over easy, scrambled or poached, french toast, omelettes and a choice of ham, sausage or bacon as your meaty accompaniment will set you up for the day. Burgers and deli-style sandwiches are a good choice for those needing greater sustenance, and the salads are also deceptively satisfying. It won't be the cheapest breakfast you'll find, but anyone after some homestyle comfort foods need look no further.
A top spot in Rio for foreigners and the Brazilians who love them, Gringo Café is a gay friendly diner where loyal regulars rave about the food, generous cocktails, and the sidewalk seating ideal for great American-style food. Sam is super friendly, with ready advice about Rio and it has become a great post-beach place to see some friendly faces.
