First opened in São Paulo in 2009 and then in cities as diverse as Porto Alegre, Salvador and Teresina, Rio's new Urban Arts gallery/poster shop channels the counter-culture, talent discovery spirit of New York or London's indie galleries and combines it with the eminently consumable cool of  breakthrough successes like Urban Outfitters.

Street art is, of course, very much the emphasis in the small Gávea space, though far from exclusively. Every two months a new artist is invited to exhibit, whilst a constantly refuelled stock of posters by a huge spectrum of talent, encompassing the country's best urban artists as well as amateur photographers, is presented like 12" records, to be flicked through at leisure. Each has the number of the run recorded and a watermark stamped on the corner, and offers an affordable route in to Brazil's scene (the sale price of the original works will not exceed R$4,000) as well as important outlet for its budding future stars.
