Occupying the second floor of the glorious new Museu de Arte do Rio (MAR) is the beautifully presented art collection of Romanian immigrant Jean Boghici. Despite having spent six decades in a Copacabana apartment, it is one of the most important private collections in the country, housing work by, amongst others, Debret, Modigliani, Kandinsky and Tarsila do Amaral, hung here in a style rarely seen in major art institutions and with the expressed intention of reflecting their former abode just along the coast.
Taking in surrealism, modernism and abstract art as well as a handful of unique and engrossing paintings from Russia and China, the chronology of the upstairs exhibition Rio de Imagens is jettisoned for a more casual approach, and the presentation brings with it an accessibility that demands revisiting. Seemingly thrown together as one would expect to find in an art lover's apartment, the hanging reflects the desire of the museum's creators to be something for everybody to digest.
