The name may have certain dark spiritual connotations but this remains a beautiful slice of beach out beyond Barra and Recreio dos Bandeirantes. Almost an extension of the latter, a large rock named after musician Tim Maia and only accessible at low tide divides it in two, meaning if the surf isn't so good one side, the other probably will be. Longboards are the preferred method of riding thanks to the waves breaking a long way off the shore, itself providing a useful (albeit deep and prone to strong currents) pool for swimmers and paddlers if you are happy to risk getting a board to the back of the head.
