This edgy, simply decorated independent cultural centre hosts all manner of art exhibitions and eclectic, live music sets in its enclosed and open-air spaces in a warehouse space in the off-the-beaten-path neighbourhood of Lapa.

Run by a young, dynamic trio of cultural producers, it's the kind of place – you know the type – where you're as likely to stumble across a gritty show of underground stencil artworks as an unexpectedly full-on, positively orchestral big band live concert. They also run regular bazaars, selling the likes of young designers' T-shirts, bags and accessories.

While the sound may leave something to be desired, Serralheria's eclectic schedule still manages to attract a music-savvy crowd who pack themselves in, finding space on the room's wooden benches. Even with an ever-changing programme, Friday nights are a sure bet for contemporary jazz.
