In 1946, nearly 300 Lebanese immigrants joined forces to create a social space that would serve as an important meeting point for the members of the Lebanese and Brazilian elite. Built on a corner of Leblon back when it was still a sleepy, quiet neighbourhood on the outskirts of Rio, this members-only club has extensive sports facilities, including three tennis courts, two pools, a full gym, a football field, two restaurants and clubs.
Once known as the place where Rio's politicians rubbed shoulders with the crème de la crème of the Lebanese community, in recent years, the Clube Monte Líbano has gained a reputation for hosting a wide array of cultural events and parties that are also open to non-members. In addition to offering weekly belly dancing shows, accompanied by a lavish buffet of authentic Lebanese eats, its grandiose event hall is usually at the centre of some of the city's lively festas juninas, feijoadas, costume parties and a massive new year's bash.
