The glories of this beautiful building may be somewhat faded, but for fans of horse racing the appeal is still clearly apparent. Depending on the week, races can be found from Wednesday to Sunday, but even with the attraction of free entry, an inexpensive bar and the only place in town to legally have a flutter, you will rarely find the place even a quarter full. Until, that is, Derby Day rolls around.

The biggest prize in the country, the Grande Premio do Brasil, takes place on the first or second weekend of August every year and suddenly the grandstand beomes a magnet for the carioca elite. Fashion shows, big prize money and, yes, ridiculous hats are the main attractions, but dont forget your collar and shoes if you want to get into the smarter of the three stands, complete with a view down the home straight to rival any course in the world.
