Gilberto Chateaubriand's permanent collection on the top floor of the Museu de Arte Moderna goes under the title 'Contemporary Genealogies'. Uniting some of the key artists from Brazil from the 1920s to the 1970s, the works are organised into four sections through which the viewer is encouraged to explore new perspectives on the modern world, delivered by the likes of Portinari, Tunga, Tarsila do Amaral and Di Cavalcanti.
'Visions and Vertigo' chronicles the desperation of Brazil’s perceived 'non-identity' since the modernist period, and 'Broken City: Conflicts and Affections' focuses on the modern urban society in which friction and disagreement live hand in hand with amity. 'Hybrid Bodies: Identities in Transit' looks at the body as a battlefield of desired and absent subjectivity, and 'Geometric Breaths' comments on the arrival of modernity in Brazil.

Hello M.M, I was at the museum yesterday and the Contemporary Genealogies exhibition is still very much up and running on the top floor of the MAM. They told me it had been closed for 3 days while the new Giacometti exhibition was being put together, but unfortunately we do not always have advanced notice of short-term closures to pass on to our readers. Best regards, The Time Out Rio team

It is a good 20 min drive, 40 if you use public transport and are staying near ipanema, but arriving there all they could say is it is not on anymore... Not worth going!
