Built in 2002 by three architects – including the ubiquitous Paulo Mendes da Rocha – who transformed three houses into a gallery, Vermelho also has a garden and an impressive facade used for installations and projections. The gallery hosts an annual non-profit performance art event called VERBO. Artists include rising young star Jonathas de Andrade, from Recife, who at just 28 made this year's Bienal with his work Adult Education, which reworks images and texts from 1970s pedagogical materials.
