In 1982, the architect Lina Bo Bardi inaugurated a new building, SESC Pompeia, organising a major exhibition of toys to launch the space. Thirty years on, ‘Mais de Mil Brinquedos para a Criança Brasileira’, (‘More than 1,000 Toys for Brazilian Children’), a larger version of the same show, returns to the place where it all began.

Spinning tops, shuttlecocks, papier mâché dolls, building blocks, cars, planes – and even a 5th-century BC Greek pottery figurine – are laid out like an immense toy factory. Visitors can climb ramps, scoot through tunnels, pass along conveyor belts, and find hidden windows – and a thousand ways to play, without an iPad or joystick in sight.
