Swans, waterfowl and turtles are the local layabouts at the huge lake that forms the centrepiece of this park, just south of Liberdade. Open since 1939, the park is surrounded on all sides by residential buildings that have grown up around it. The playground and the tree-lined track that circles the lake draw families and locals out for a stroll, and joggers who work their way round and round the lake, stopping occasionally to bathe themselves in cool mist from one of the well disguised - erm, cool misters? Clue: look for the big green buttons on the sides of what look like information boards, dotted around the lake.

Round off a visit to the park with sushi or a bowl of noodles in one of Liberdade's nearby eateries.
