The festival conceived by Perry Farrell comes to São Paulo for its first Brazilian edition Easter weekend 7 and 8 April. The event brings an impressive lineup with deep roots in rock, but flirts with electronica and hip hop. Altogether, there are 43 atractions. Among the headliners, the Foo Fighters play on the 7th, but have already sold out, probably due to the fact that they haven’t been in Brazil since 2001’s Rock in Rio. The second day features the Arctic Monkeys, one of the most expected performances of the festival. The golden boys of alternative rock play their first long-awaited date in Brazil, drawing from the repertoire of Suck It and See, from 2011.

But those are only two of the major sets taking place at Jockey Club. Also on the 7th, indie giants TV on the Radio and rock ‘n’ roll mainstay Joan Jett and the Blackhearts highlight the main stage events. On the Alternativo stage, you won’t want to miss shows by carioca banda Tipo Uísque and rap veterans Pavilhão 9. On the Perry stage – home to the electronic attractions – catch Peaches, the Brazilians Veiga & Salazar and PerryEtty, the duo featuring Perry Farrell and his wife.
The lineup on 8 April focuses on some more recent bands whose popularity has grown among the alternative crowd, like Friendly Fires, Gogol Bordello, MGMT and Foster the People. Perry Farrell takes the stage again on Easter Sunday, this time with Jane’s Addiction, the band who headlined the inaugural Lollapalooza in the early 1990s with their (obviously rethought) farewell tour. On the same day, the Alternativo stage hosts Black Drawing Chalks, Blubell, Velhas Virgens and Garage Fuzz, and on the Perry stage, the rappers from Racionais MCs and DJs Kings of Swingers, Killer on the Dancefloor and Daniel Brandão represent Brazil. On the same stage, Grammy-winning DJ sensation Skrillex pumps it up with his popular dubstep.
The venue
The main stages are situated opposite each other inside the Jockey Club, with the Alternativo stage right in the middle of the two. Perry stage is in a corner of the arena, to the side of Butantã stage. Incidentally, this is the only stage with a roof over the audience. On the main stages, shows begin every hour, with no pause between the rotating schedules of Butantã and Cidade Jardim. On the Perry stage, each performance begins 15 minutes after the previous one.
On the entrance’s left side, is Kidzapalooza. Dedicated to festival attendees’ little ones, this space will have presentations by the students of the Conservatório e Faculdade de Música Souza Lima, musical workshops and a race with a scholarship prize. Kidzapalooza is open from 1-5.50pm on 7 April and 12.10-6.50pm on 8 April.

Essential info
For the hungry, there are eight food courts planned around the arena’s perimeter. Information about prices and types of cuisine you’ll find there are currently unavailable, so prepare for the worst (vegetarians: expect some fried potato variant). If you need a rest, tents will be available across the courtyard for a respite from direct sunlight. There will also be ten medical facilities on-hand. And, as expected, chemical toilets abound: one group on the side of Butantã stage and two other sets on opposite sides of the arena.
As security tradition goes, bottles, cans, helmets, umbrellas, animals, guns and sharp objects of any kind are not allowed.
Getting there
Please note: there will be no official parking lot at the venue itself. Also it is very difficult to find parking spots directly on the street, which are mostly located far away from the Jockey Club’s gate. Taxis or public transportation – which will provide special festival accommodation – are much better options. The Jockey Club’s main entrance is located at Avenida Lineu de Paula Machado 1263, and the venue will also have two smaller alternate entrances available both days.
