Opening its doors at the beginning of 2012, this is the third and newest of the Museu de Arte Contemporânea's spaces in São Paulo. Just across the busy Avenida Vinte e Três de Maio from the MAC space within the Bienal building, in Parque do Ibirapuera, this new MAC is housed in another Oscar Niemeyer-designed building – an impressive, monumental space that has been given a new and altogether more creative lease of life from its former function as the home of São Paulo's transport department (DETRAN).

During the decades in which it housed DETRAN, the building's interior spaces were divided up to meet the needs of the busy department. The plan for the space now is that it should host longer running exhibitions, and that it should eventually house the majority of the MAC archive of modern art works from the Bienal building as well as those from the branch in the University of São Paulo campus in Cidade Universitária.
